Well, the meals I had in Washington DC weren't as spectacular as that in NYC. Mostly because we didn't plan a 'food tour' in DC and were more preoccupied combing through the city's numerous museums, most were completely free of charge but of course, they accept donations. But this is just a post summing up what the food I had in DC. Read on!
So, we took the train from New York, Penn Station which arrived Washington DC, Union Station about 3 hours later. Do note that the travel hours are different depending on which train you choose on the Amtrak webpage. The train journey there was bad because though we bought tickets, there weren't enough seats on the train and I had to stand for about 2-3 stations after it left Penn. Weird ya. Either the system oversold tickets or some people who were supposed to disembark did not. Anyway. When we arrived, it was almost 2pm. We went to put down our stuff and went out to find food.
Philly Cheesesteak from Philly Mike's
This was the first time I tried a Philly cheesesteak and I love it! The philly cheesesteak is actually a Philadelphia Cheesesteak, a sub that is made from thinly sliced beef and melted cheese. I don't know what sauce that was, or was it just Beef juices that made the sub this tasty! It is a very leaky and messy sub but its really good!
The Philly Cheesesteak came along with a small serving or fries as well which were very well prepared. We got this sub and walked back to our hotel which was a 5 minutes walk away and the fries were still blazing hot and cut thick, it allowed us to taste the potato. So simple and amazing. :O
We wanted to eat from this food truck again but it shifted the next day. But I guess you can check its twitter, twitter@phillymikes to find out its exact location in DC.
Blogged about shake shack previously in the post New York City: Food to Look Out For. I ordered the same think, the smoked shack burger cos the rest weren't spicy so I thought I'd stick to this slightly spicy one and as usual, the heavy and sinful Peanut Butter Smoothie. What I liked about the Shake Shack in DC was that they served crinkle cut french fries unlike the one in NYC where they served Shoestring Fries. These gave were a lot nicer than the dry and over fried shoestring fries, and the potato inside matched that creamy cheddar cheese. Mmm. Yums.
Pi Bites
fontina, mozzarella, volpi proscuitto and rosemary, breaded and baked with a spicy tomato sauce
Kinda like this! I love mozzarella sticks and this is just a healthier version of the dish as its baked not deep fried. It was melty inside all the same and the spicy tomato sauce complemented it perfectly. :)
Deep dish Speciality Pi
mozzarella, italian meatballs of hormone-free pork and and beef, red peppers and basil
This was something quite different for me, the Deep dish pizza. I was told deep-dish pizzas came from Chicago. They are pizzas, but have ingredients in an inverse proportion to the the regular italian pizza. The deep dish is largely made up of sauce and whatever fillings you ordered, in this case, its meatballs. The deep dish pizza is messy compared to a normal pizza and I ate it with a fork and knife cos it was impossible to hold a slice with all the filling threatening to fall out. Atop the base of the pizza was a chunk load of generous cheese which stretches when you try to get a slice. For people who hate pizza crust but still want all the ingredients that make up a pizza, this is the way to go!
